Learning about Sustainable Energy - Testing materials for insulation properties

22 December 2022 | Science

2nd and 3rd class conducted an investigation into what materials make the best insulators

Pupils in 2nd & 3rd have been learning about sustainability of energy; they discussed the types of clothes people wear to suit the climate. They discussed what makes a coat nice and warm for very cold days and what materials might make good insulators. They also looked at the SEAI resource - Guzzler HAs a Problem keeping his chocolate warm. They looked at materials that might help keep the drink warm. They they planned and conducted an experiement to see what materials made the best insulators. They made predictions beforehand, deciding that the bubble wrap would be the best, followed by newsprint, followed by tissue paper. The class discussed how to keep the test fair - they decided that the same amount of water would have to be put into each jar and that each jar should have two layers of material.  They also decided that there should be one jar with no material on it to act as a control. The termperature of each jar was taken at four minute intervals and as predicted the bubble wrap kept the water hotter for much longer.
