Active Schools' Week 8th-11th June 2021

Active Schools' week was a very busy, active week for all classes. It got off to a great start with good wishes from Paul O' Connell, former Munster & Ireland rugby player who also set a challenge for the children - to practice skipping so they could skip for a full minute. There was also a video clip from Donncha O' Callaghan wishing everyone a great Active Schools' week and encouraging all children to get their friends and family active - he said they're always on the look-out for new "Ireland's Fittest Family" competitors!

There was a multitude of activity throughout the week - Juniors had PE station activities; 3rd class used the active walkway for active breaks throughout the week; they also used many of the PE activities from www.daretobelieve.ie Road to Tokyo programme which involved reaction drills, throwing, jumping and much more.

Each class had their own slot for a "Sports-day" in the adjoining community pitch as with Covid restrictions, we could not have a whole-school event. Junior Infants had sack races, wheelbarrow races and running races; 1st class completed an obstacle course, had a welly-throwing competition, three-legged races and more. Second class completed a number of activities for our sports day including an obstacle course and an egg and spoon race. The highlight of the day was the sack race’. 3rd class did a photostar orienteering activity followed by an "Olympic Torch" relay races and wheelbarrow races; 5th class had wheelbarrow races, a 'throw the welly' competition & tug-o'-war. 6th class activities included wellie throwing, a penalty shoot-out and tug o' war.

Catherine in 4th class wrote this report on their sport's day:

                                    Our Sports Day

On Friday the 11th of June we had one of our favourite days in the school year. It was Sports Day. We were very fortunate with the weather as it was a lovely summers day. We had an afternoon filled with activities and fun. We did lots of activities including egg and spoon, 50m sprint, sack race, penalty shootouts, crossbar challenge, tug of war, welly throw and standing long jump.

The tug of war was especially fun. The 9 girls took on the 9 boys and to everybody's surprise the girls won 4-0. This year, we had a welly throwing competition for the first time. It is a lot more difficult than it looks!!

By the time 3 o clock came we were all exhausted but went home smiling after a fun-filled day with our friends.
