3rd class investigated conduction
3rd class discussed sources of heat and identified the sun, lava and geysers as natural sources and identified items such as kettle, toaster, stove, radiator as artificial sources. When questioned, the identified metal as good for items like radiators and saucepans as it carries the heat - the word conductor was introduced and then its opposite - insulator.
To investigate this, an experiment with three spoons-one metal, one wooden and one plastic, butter and boiling water in a heatproof water was carried out. The three teaspoons were placed in the heatproof bowl, a tsp of butter was placed on each at the same distance along the handle. Boiling water was then poured into the bowl.
Before testing: Pupils identified that the same amount of butter should be used and that it needed to be on the same point along the handle of the spoon to keep the test fair. They also predicted that the butter on the metal spoon would melt first - of course they were correct!
