3rd & 4th class were very lucky to be invited to a Festival of Science event in Kilmallock library!
Children from 4th Class took part in the Festival of Science 2022, run by Mary Immaculate College at Kilmallock Library on 11th November. The class had a fun filled afternoon with The Nutty Scientists.
The Nutty Scientists explored a range of science experiments using dry ice. They explored concepts such as changing states of matter, cloud formation, density, solubility, pressure vs. temperature and the properties of gases.
Dry ice is the solid form (frozen) of carbon dioxide. It turns into a carbon dioxide gas instead of a liquid as it breaks down. Carbon dioxide is the primary gas in our planet’s atmosphere.
When dry ice ‘melts’ it turns directly into carbon dioxide gas. Dry ice breaks down directly into gas rather than a liquid form. The children learned that this process is called ‘sublimation’.
The children participated in a number of experiments including:
Dry ice bubbles and soap tower
Dry ice that pops
Bouncing Smoke Bubbles
Dry ice fog
Exploding bags
Dry ice balloons
The children learned that carbon dioxide naturally moves from one part of the Earth to another through the carbon cycle. By burning fossil fuels, people are adding carbon to the atmosphere (in the form of carbon dioxide) faster than natural processes can remove it. That's why the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing, which is causing global climate change. The Nutty Scientists discussed with the children ways we can reduce the amount of greenhouse gases we're putting into the atmosphere.
